After 10 years of coaching, I have been able to overcome many of the challenges and take advantage of the rewards of having ADHD. One aspect of my ADHD that I still struggle with, though, is poor time management. Now that I am writing at home for a living I really see how much of an issue it is. I sit down with the absolute best of intentions, and I tell myself that I am not moving until I have written for an hour. Or written three articles. Or written an entire page. And before I know it, I am getting the mail, washing the dishes, or watching a YouTube video. My page has three words on it. And I have wasted half an hour.
Then I found a not-so-secret tool that I am absolutely in love with: the Epica Large Digital Timer/Stopwatch. One common recommendation for improved time management is using a digital timer to keep track of tasks. I have tried that in the past, but I have never found a digital timer that worked the way I wanted it to. They were either hard to use, hard to read, or the buttons were difficult. That is not the case with the Epica Large Digital Stopwatch/Timer. I keep it right next to my computer all of the time, and I am constantly using it to time my work. If I am particularly unfocused, I will set the timer for 15 minutes and tell myself that I will only write until the timer goes off. And miraculously, it works! I know that I can do anything for fifteen minutes. Then when my time is done, I have usually gotten into a groove and I keep on writing.
You can also use the timer to teach your children time management skills. You can set them up to clean their room or do a chore for fifteen minutes. It is a great way to focus your work, knowing that once the work is done you will be able to do whatever you want.
There are several reasons that I like the Epica Large Digital Timer/Stopwatch. First, it has a large, clear display so I can see it from across the room. It also has a beep that is loud enough to be heard but not so loud that it is annoying. There are only three buttons, which makes it much easier to use. The buttons are minute, second and start/stop. You can either set the timer first and hit start for the timer to count down, or you can hit the start button when the timer is at zero and it will count up. After the countdown is complete the timer beeps for a minute and if you don’t shut it off it starts to count up again, so if you have left the room you can come back and see how long it has been since the timer went off originally. Another great feature is that if you hit stop on the countdown timer, it returns to the original time you entered; mine always stays at 15 minutes. And even though I keep mine next to my laptop, it also has a magnet so that you can stick it on your refrigerator or stove.
And of course, if you want, you can use the timer for cooking as well! The Epica Large Digital Timer/Stopwatch is well made, easy-to-read and simple to use. Use it to develop new habits and to keep you on task.
